 1. Introduction Welcome to the 'Italia On-line' web site. This site is designed to complement the Place and People television series on Italy and contains sophisticated interactive resources which are freely available for schools. 'Italia On-line' provides self-contained exercises employing maps, tables and statistics which will allow the information on Italy to be compared and contrasted with UK equivalents. Italia On-line will be updated and developed over the 3 years that the Place and People series is broadcast by Channel 4 Schools. 2. Software 'Italia On-line' is best seen on the latest Internet browsers and uses QuickTime and the Shockwave plug-in. Please go to the Toolcheck page for help in getting your machine correctly set up. 3. Downloading You are advised to allow some time for downloading software or files, and may find that downloading in the morning is quicker than in the afternoon. You can download the Shockwave movies of each section of the site for use "off-line" rather than "on-line" and will need to allow some time for the files to download in this instance as well. Occasionally you may see blank boxes in parts of the activity screens, particularly when you click to reveal new maps or pictures. This happens because the image is still downloading. Please wait and the image will appear as soon as it is fully downloaded. 4. Education level This site is a stand-alone resource but all the activities complement programmes in the Channel 4 Schools' GCSE / Standard Grade geography series PLACE AND PEOPLE: ITALY. 5. Interactive material The site material has been specially written to provide relevant activities for geography students in a way that exploits the interactive nature of the Internet. 6. Flexibility of route Although teachers may wish their students to follow a linear progression through the activities the site has been designed to allow as much flexibility as possible. It is possible to enter the activities at any point and to explore the available options in any order. 7. Other web sites Throughout Italia On-line there are opportunities to explore other sites on the Internet which have been selected for the extension material that they provide. These sites have not necessarily been produced specifically for schools and teachers may wish to explore them before allowing students access. |
